Deployment of LiveCode will Support Secondary School Students in Learning and Creating Software

EDINBURGH – 15th March 2012 – RunRev today announced at The Education Show in Birmingham, UK, a significant deal with East Lothian Council that will see LiveCode deployed across all secondary schools in the region. The new initiative represents one of the larger deployments of LiveCode in an education environment, and supports a drive by East Lothian education authority to revolutionise the way computer science is taught in secondary schools by ensuring students gain a practical insight into computer studies. The deployment will take place in stages over the course of 2012.

Nestled on the outskirts of Edinburgh, East Lothian is a high-achieving education authority. Pupils at East Lothian's secondary schools equalled or exceeded national averages for qualifications gained in 2011, according to the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). With an emphasis on ensuring students acquire practical skills that can be used in a commercial environment, the authority was looking at ways to enhance its computing courses. Jack Tennent, a computer studies teacher at Knox Academy and Preston Lodge High School, discovered LiveCode and quickly realised its potential. Not only does it offer a way to develop new course materials and teaching aids but can also be used by students to create apps and learn about software development.

“The familiarity and comfort factor that young people have with mobile and computing devices means that any computer science course has to be that much more appealing and engaging if it is to be taught successfully,” said Jack Tennent, computing teacher at Knox Academy and Preston Lodge High School. “Equally the course has to be relevant to the demands and expectations of the commercial world. Today software and app development are increasingly a feature in many commercial activities and understanding the art of software development is an essential skill for any secondary school student to learn.”

"LiveCode’s easy to understand language and cross-platform nature has the potential to demystify what has been a highly technical and complex subject. By doing away with the complexity, LiveCode allows students to learn about software development and create apps that draw on their creativity, flair, passion and imagination. For teachers, LiveCode offers more scope to create tailored teaching aids and course material quickly and easily,” he added.

“The scope and size of the deal with East Lothian Council is significant for what it says about the way computer studies is viewed and taught in schools,” said Kevin Miller, CEO of RunRev. “Many leading industry figures have commented on the fact that for too long computing courses have concentrated on using software tools rather than understanding how software is created and how it can be applied. East Lothian’s investment in LiveCode is an investment in the future knowledge of their students to appreciate the role of software development and apply their skills in a commercial or other environment.”

New Education Microsite Packed Full of Valuable Hints, Tips and Advice for Computer Studies Educators Worldwide

EDINBURGH – 15 March 2012 – RunRev today unveiled at The Education Show in Birmingham, UK, a new resource aimed at supporting education professionals who teach or plan to utilise Computer Studies in their lessons. The RunRev education microsite features tutorials, case studies, guides and other material that can be freely downloaded, all designed to help educations teach students to love programming. The microsite can be found on the RunRev website here.

With the continued emphasis on making Computer Studies courses and programs more engaging for students and relevant to the needs of industry, education professionals face the challenge of keeping their material current and fresh. Michael Gove’s recent announcement about the relaxation of the Department of Education’s Programme of Study guidance adds to this challenge, as the onus is now placed on teachers to develop appropriate course content. The RunRev education microsite provides invaluable material and practical advice on how to use the LiveCode software development environment to build tailored teaching aids or an entire course. One such example, which is available on the microsite, is the course work created by Steven Whyte, Computer Studies teacher at Gracemount School Edinburgh.

“With the changing emphasis on how Computer Studies is taught in schools, our goal is to support teachers in meeting these new demands and expectations,” said Kevin Miller, CEO of RunRev. “The education microsite is first and foremost a free resource that we hope will encourage and empower education professionals to embrace software development in their work and utilise its potential to create and develop teaching aids and course material that engages and stimulates students studying Computer Studies. Teaching is a demanding job and education professionals already face many challenges, therefore our goal is to make both teachers and students love programming.”

LiveCode in Practice - Gracemount School, Edinburgh

Steven Whyte felt there was a dire need to teach his computing students, aged 13-15, modern programming languages and how to use them to create apps. He turned to LiveCode to create a series of workshops and course notes. Students are shown how to build programs that are of interest to them, and are encouraged to go farther and develop ideas of their own. The nature of the programming language allows the students to devise, test and build their own programs. Through this they learn valuable lessons about software development, rather than getting bogged down in layers of coding and syntax and thus losing interest. The result is students who create programs in their free time and who continue to study Computer Science beyond Standard Grade (equivalent of GCSE in England).

RunRev Brings Cross-Device Mobile App Development to Android; Survey Results Show LiveCode Saved an Average of 51 Days of Development Time, or 47 Percent Over Traditional Environments

SAN JOSE, Calif. – April 26, 2011 – One out of every three new phones sold in the US is an Android-based device. As Android continues to grow in popularity, developers recognize the importance of developing for both iOS and Android, and also how to stay competitive by completing and submitting quality apps quickly. With this in mind, RunRev Ltd today announced the fastest way to create iOS and Android apps from one code base through the general availability of LiveCode for Android (following the release of LiveCode for iOS in late 2010). And the benefits of LiveCode stretch far beyond its cross-device capabilities, saving developers hundreds of hours or nearly two months in development time.

The results of a new RunRev survey of 670 developers show that they saved 51 days of development time using LiveCode over Java and Objective-C, while one-third of all projects simply would not have been viable without LiveCode. Following are some of the comments from LiveCode developers on their experiences creating apps:

  • “LiveCode is very easy to use and learn. I created my first Android application in just four days without prior knowledge of LiveCode.”
  • “This tool is so intuitive and at such a high level that it tackles major projects with ease without the requirement of the learning curve of Objective C or even BASIC.”
  • “If it weren't for LiveCode I would have had to use two different programming platforms to deliver my solution. Other cross platform tools were simply lacking significantly in functionality. LiveCode made it a breeze.”
  • “With traditional coding practices, the project would have been abandoned.”
  • “Very rapid application development AND upgraded features made it easier with LiveCode than (what would have been) possible with C/C++/Basic/Java.”
  • “This was my first project using LiveCode, I would probably not have done the project if I had to use Java or VB.”

Starting from $99 (£79), LiveCode for Android continues the long tradition of easy to use, feature-rich development software that enables individuals to create stunning apps for multiple platforms and devices. Whether developers are just starting out in mobile app development, or are seasoned software creators, LiveCode gives them the power to:

  • Create apps from one code base that run on every major device and platform, while taking advantage of the many OS-specific features on each device.
  • Realize commercial opportunities quickly by supporting today’s fastest growing platforms.
  • Use an iterative, compile-free coding environment to view changes in real time, resulting in significant productivity gains.
  • Access a high-level language, with English-like syntax for writing code that makes sense.
  • Create active prototypes, stunning rich-media cross-device apps, and powerful productivity apps for in-house use.
